The Demon Princes is a five-book series of science fiction novels by Jack Vance, which cumulatively relate the story of one Kirth Gersen as he exacts his revenge on five notorious criminals, collectively known as the Demon Princes, who carried his village off into slavery during his childhood. Each novel deals with his pursuit of one of the five Princes.

The Book of Dreams is the final book of the five volume Demon Princes series. I don't think it's necessarily the best -- the third volume (The Palace of Love) or the fourth (The Face) would probably be my candidate for that -- but The Book of Dreams is still an excellent work and manages to bring the series to a satisfying, if somewhat poignant, resolution. Potential readers probably don't need me to separately review the books of the series, since product descriptions and other reviewers give the specific premises of each. I'll use this space, then, (along with my review of the first book) to talk about the overall series and make a few general comments about why Vance's work is so good.Jack Vance has written fantasy, science fiction, and mysteries. Of course some of his books are better than others, but he never really lets you down. Which is his true metier? The introduction to one anthology of his mystery/suspense novels suggests that mystery-writing was always his true calling. If you count the number of mysteries he's written -- about eleven, including three under the Ellery Queen house name -- and compare that with the number of his fantasy and SF novels -- somewhere past thirty -- this "really a mystery writer" contention looks doubtful. When you consider the elegant imagery and sense of wonder which Vance excels at giving us, and which is so much more evident in his fantasy/SF than in his mysteries, "really a mystery writer" looks unsupportable. So, I feel justified in saying that I think the fantastic stuff is where his true glory lies. (I've read that now, in his old age, Vance only reads -- listens to audio books of -- mysteries, but that doesn't change the body of his work.) This being said, I will add that, while I like all of his oeuvres, I enjoy his science fiction above all else. He imbues his SF with a detached, poetic lyricism that seems more natural to high fantasy than to space opera. This contrast between tone and genre creates a tension that never fails to fascinate.
In the Demon Princes series Vance uses a simple underlying plot device: the protagonist's need to avenge the murder and enslavement of his home colony's entire population. This revenge premise could support a boys' adventure story from some previous era, but Vance presents it with so much intelligence and style that this is clearly a book for grownups. As I've written before, a lot of Vance's genius is in the details.
If you enjoy colorful action-adventure with a strong hero and grotesquely evil villains, but need this to be written for an adult sensibility, Vance does the job. I recommend this entire series.

This is the fifth and final Demon Princes novel. It details the end of the protagonist's quest for vengeance that began in The Star King, the first of the series.
Jack Vance's two fantasy series, "The Dying Earth" and "Lyonesse," are universally praised as masterpieces. Vance's fans agree that he was an equally skilled SF writer, but there is little agreement about which books exemplify his mastery of the genre. Some fans would suggest the Demon Princes series, while others regard the series as somewhat tedious. I side with the less enthused crowd. I appreciate the protagonist and I enjoyed watching him become craftier and more resourceful as the series progressed, but I wish he had been given better things to do. I also enjoyed visits to Old Earth and quotes from the Baron Bodissey, which are vintage Vance.
It is generally agreed that the Demon Princes series improved as it went along, partly due to a 14 year hiatus that Vance took between volumes 3 and 4. Fans agree that the last two books are the best. Fans who prefer the detective aspects of Vance's work prefer Book of Dreams. Fans (like me) who prefer the more grotesque aspects of Vance's work prefer Volume 4 The Face. In any event, I would not be a Jack Vance fan if this was his only output. My Sci Fi picks from his oeuvre would be The Moon Moth, Emphyrio, Araminta Station, Ports of Call, Durdane, and maybe Magnificent Showboat or Tschai.
An excellent finishing book to the Demon Princes series.
I enjoyed the book but the last one in a series should have an END
